In our recent move, it proved a prime opportunity to start going through random accumulations over the years.  In so doing, I found a recipe that had belonged to my grandmother for kahlua.  So I made it.
While I’d like to think i’m not normally one to toot my own horn, i will here (isn’t that what blogs are kinda for in the first place?).
I found it to be rather good, and super simple to make.  Here is the original recipe:
2oz instant coffee
2 1/4 cups sugar
2 cups boiling water
1 vanilla bean,
1 fifth brandy (cheapest available).
Dissolve coffee in water, add sugar, mix and cool. Sliver vanilla and add, along with brandy. Marinate 30 days.
The only specifics i can give you beyond this is that I used Nescafé, and i went with the $12 bottle of brandy rather than the cheapest (around $4).  It should be noted that the brandy i did use was the most expensive bottle outside of the locked case at the supermarket.  It goes up pretty sharply from there.
The bonus to this recipe is that I got 2 fifths of (better than) kahlua for about $20 (about the cost of 1 fifth of kahlua in the US). So unless you feel like braving San Ysidro every time you’re in the mood for a white russian or even just a little kick in your coffee, i highly recommend this.
Above you’ll find the former (white russian).  Absolutely made my day.
2 parts vodka, 1 part kahlua, 1 part cream.
cheers!

The way to drink a cocktail is quickly, while it’s still laughing at you. Wines, of course, merely smile.

P.P.S. Don’t you drink? I notice you speak slightingly of the bottle. I have drunk since I was fifteen and few things have given me more pleasure. When you work hard all day with your head and know you must work again the next day what else can change your ideas and make them run on a different plane like whisky? When you are cold and wet what else can warm you? Before an attack who can say anything that gives you the momentary well being that rum does? I would as soon not eat at night as not to have red wine and water. The only time it isn’t good for you is when you write or when you fight. You have to do that cold. But it always helps my shooting. Modern life, too, is often a mechanical oppression and liquor is the only mechanical relief. Let me know if my books make any money and will come to Moscow and we will find somebody that drinks and drink my royalties up to end the mechanical oppression.
